Potassium nitrate sprays doubled the yield of citrus trees affected by HLB
HLB "Greening" is a very serious citrus disease, caused by the motile bacteria Candidatus Liberibacter spp., and vectored efficiently by various citrus psyllids. Its fast spreading is threatening the citrus industry in entire USA, and more than 33 other countries. Once infected, there is no known method to cure the trees. The disease markedly reduces the tree's fruitfulness, causes their fast degeneration until their quick death. A 5-years experiment carried out by University of Florida scientists, found a very clear positive effect on trees health, by treating them foliarly by potassium nitrate, plus various other ingredients, like trace-nutrients, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and products inducing systemic acquired resistance (SAR) to stress, e.g. phosphorous acid (H3PO3). All treatments containing potassium nitrate produced decreased deterioration speed, doubling trees' fruitfulness. Applying potassium nitrate by itself produced the highest net income increase, at annual 1925 US$/ha, compared with untreated control.
