Foliar applied potassium nitrate is more effective on canopy quality than soil application in saline conditions

The effect of KNO3 application on perennial ryegrass salinity tolerance was checked by pot experiment (perlite:sand 1:1), in Tabriz, Iran. The treatments were NaCl levels at 0 and 60 mM, combined with KNO3 levels at 0, 5, 10 and 15mM, applied either to the soil, or foliarly. KNO3 levels at 5 & 10mM promoted leaf growth at NaCl 0mM and 60mM, respectively. In NaCl 60mM treatment, however, plants treated with KNO3, showed less reduction of leaf area, and fresh and dry weight, than plants without KNO3. The 15mM KNO3 treatment significantly reduced the plant’s survival to <10%. The survival percentage of plants under salinity conditions was higher for the foliar KNO3 treatments, compared to the soil applications at the same concentrations. For instance, at 60mM NaCl, foliarly applied 5mM KNO3 produced 47% plant survival, while soil- applied 5mM KNO3 produced 32% surviving plants only. Foliar 5-10mM KNO3 was ideal at these conditions.
