Combination of foliar applied potassium nitrate with ‘Waiken’ can effectively break floral bud dormancy in peach and nectarine.
Several studies were conducted in two consecutive years, with rest-breaking chemicals, to modulate rest and flowering on low-chill peach cultivars, 'Florida Grande' and 'Florida King', and nectarine cv. 'Sun Wright'. Trials were conducted on 5-year-old trees. Treatments were November foliar sprays of: control; 5% KNO3, 'Waiken' (a mixture of certain fatty-acid esters) by itself, at 2% or 4%; or 'Waiken' at 2% or 4%, combined with 5% KNO3. Best results, expressed by high rates of breaking floral-bud dormancy, 1–2 weeks earlier flowering, concentrated flowering and increased fruit-set and yield, were obtained by combining 'Waiken' with KNO3. These treatments improved fruit size in low-chill peach cv. 'Florda Grande', and in low-chill nectarine cv. 'Sun Wright', but decreased fruit size in medium-chill peach cv. 'Florda King'. The said treatments had no effect on the internal quality of the fruits of the said crops. 'Sun Wright' required higher 'Waiken' concentration than 'Florida Grande'.
