Cucumber phenological phases and their nutrition requirements
Cucumbers grow best under conditions of high temperature, humidity, and light intensity, and with an uninterrupted supply of water and nutrients. Under favorable conditions the plants grow rapidly. Once cucumbers start growing, they must have a constant supply of soil moisture. Cucumbers are sensitive to excessive fertilizer, which increases soil salinity and causes toxicity, usually from chloride. Particular attention is required under hydroponic system. Due to the specific chloride sensitivity of cucumbers, it is highly recommended to avoid fertilizers containing chloride, such as KCl or CaCl2. Moreover, chloride-free fertilizers are an absolute prerequisite in hydroponic systems for best cucumber yields. Under intensive cultivation nitrogen should be applied primarily (80-90%) as NO3 –, and no more than 10-20% as NH4+.
