Egyptian citrus producers benefit from foliar application of nutrients
Current Egyptian citrus yields are in the range of 38-71 MT/ha. Growers wishing to improve their productivity are gradually adopting technics of mineral nutrition by foliar sprays. Foliar spraying with 1% low-biuret urea before flowering has been shown to increase flowering intensity, and hence- the yield. Then, foliar application of potassium nitrate as Ultrasol®K or Agromore 6-6-43 (an NPK product based on potassium nitrate), when fruitlets are 15-25 mm in diameter, enhance their development by increasing their final size. Best results with Ultrasol®K are obtained at a spray concentration of 3%, while higher concentrations provoke leaf scorching. On top of enhancing fruit size, this spray reduces the incidence of fruit splitting. Spraying with SQM's calcium nitrate product Ultrasol®Calcium too, reduces citrus fruit peel splitting and creasing. Additional benefits have been registered by spraying with micro-nutrients chelates like Fe-EDDHA, Cu-EDTA, Mn-EDTA, Zn-EDTA, boric acid and ammonium molybdate.
